“Cultivating present, moment-by-moment awareness helps
you come home to who you are and always have been.”
- Lama Surya Das, Awakening the Buddha Within
Mindfulness & Self-Change
Mindfulness IS:
- Moment-to-moment, present awareness
- Pure attention, staying alert, awake, and focused in the now
- Experiencing life without judging it
- Maintaining awareness of bodily sensations, flow of thoughts, feelings and emotions, and events as they occur
- A way to watch the mind
- Acknowledging and letting go
- The truth of what is
- Meeting and connecting with each experience as it happens
- A way of being
Mindfulness IS NOT:
- Automatic behavior
- Living in fantasies, fears, or anticipation
of the future
- Suppressing or denying our thoughts and feelings
- Emphasizing doing
- Being so busy that we forget to stay in touch with who we are, what we are, and what we are doing
- Being distracted, scattered, and careless
- Striving for perfection
- Judging
- A mysterious mystical state
Begin cultivating mindfulness by simply slowing down, taking a deep breath, and bringing attention to what is happening in the moment: Breathe. Observe. Let go of everything for the moment. Soften and smile. Relax. Try this liberally throughout your day.
