Daily Practice: Building a Strong Foundation
Being physically depleted undermines your ability to overcome self-defeating habits, make progress on a goal, or lead a more satisfying life. You can start today to support your change process and experience a meaningful improvement in the quality of your life by bringing greater attention to the following:
- Sleep, rest & recovery
If you are not sleeping enough and on a regular cycle, your hormonal balance and other important regulatory and repair systems will be thrown off. This can affect moods, attitudes, and your ability to control your weight.
- Nutrition
Eat balanced, low fat meals every 3-4 hours to keep blood sugar levels from dropping. It's important to eat a healthy breakfast within 1-2 hours of waking.
- Water - Hydration
Dehydration makes you tired, lethargic, confused, moody, etc. Water needs vary with weight and physical activity. You should consciously track how much water you drink on a daily basis. To estimate your daily water requirement, divide your weight (in pounds) by 2. This is the minimum number of ounces you should be drinking daily. For instance, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should be drinking at least (150 divided by 2) = 75 ounces of water daily. If it is hot or you are physically active, you should be drinking more. Remember, focus on making progress not perfection. Build awareness through daily practice. Start where you are and be accepting of your rate of progress. Each moment presents an opportunity to start again if you get distracted or drift.
